Intersection Monitoring & Control

Easily monitor and control high-traffic, urban environments with TRENDnet’s networking solutions, including industrial switches, fiber media converters, SFP modules, Modbus gateways, outdoor wireless access points, and Power over Ethernet (PoE) surveillance cameras. TRENDnet’s networking equipment allows other fundamental parts of the Intelligent Transportation System to communicate with each other, as well as with the main hub several miles away. This setup also supports V2X communications, enabling real-time data exchange between vehicles, roadside infrastructure, and centralized systems.
Serial devices, such as proximity sensors and traffic loop detectors, are networked through a rugged Industrial Modbus Gateway and a Hardened Industrial Gigabit PoE+ Managed DIN-Rail Switch, both found inside the roadside equipment enclosure to protect them from the weather. The connected serial devices support the use of real-time traffic information, allowing for changes in traffic lights and signals to keep both vehicle and car traffic moving and safe. The industrial managed switch is also supported by TRENDnet Hive™, a cloud network manager, that allows for remote management of the switch, helping to reduce overall maintenance and troubleshooting costs.
TRENDnet’s Indoor/Outdoor PoE IR Bullet Network Cameras deliver monitoring and surveillance support over this very busy intersection. The cameras are utilized in two ways. Not only are they used for general surveillance purposes and monitoring public safety, but the network cameras can be used in conjunction with the rest of the ITS, to deliver quicker and more accurate data for better decision making.
Wireless AC Outdoor PoE+ Omni-Directional Access Points allow for multiple wireless devices to connect wirelessly back to the roadside cabinet and ultimately back to the main system. Additionally, a separate SSID was setup to provide the general population with a public hotspot, primarily to allow users to look up traffic data and publication transportation schedules.
Inside the roadside equipment enclosure, an Industrial SFP to PoE++ Fiber Media Converter and an Industrial Single-Mode SFP Fiber Module are used to connect the information being collected from the busy intersection back to the main traffic hub up to 40km away.

Transit Bus Terminal

Network and manage key traffic data from municipal transit buses back to the central transit depot. Networking ITS equipment allows for immediate action with the use of real-time data. TRENDnet networking solutions include roadside units (RSU) and onboard units (OBU). In this application, RSUs include outdoor wireless access points and a network video recorder (NVR); OBUs include switches, routers, Modbus gateways, cameras, and transit card readers.
The Industrial EN50155 M12 Gigabit PoE+ Railway Switch networks devices specifically designed for rolling stock and railway applications. Common devices that are connected to the EN50155 railway switch include onboard information systems, access points, surveillance cameras, intercom system, and lighting. In this scenario, the EN50155 switch networks the onboard surveillance cameras, industrial PoE+ router, and a transit card reader (via a Modbus gateway).
The Industrial Wireless AC Gigabit PoE+ Router is what connects all the buses back to the bus depot’s main office. Data from buses will be sent through the WiFi 6 Outdoor Directional PoE Access Points to the WiFi 6 Outdoor PoE+ Omni-Directional Access Point at the main building. It will share all surveillance footage, bus traffic data, and transit card data.
The outdoor wireless directional PoE access points are installed with a Universal Wall/Pole Mount Bracket. Each directional access point connects to the outdoor wireless omni-directional PoE+ access point. Both access points are conveniently manageable remotely via TRENDnet Hive, a remote cloud network manager. Surveillance footage is fed into the 4K PoE NVR for easy management and storage.

Road Traffic Tunnel
TRENDnet’s smart transportation networking solutions help to manage, monitor, and control road tunnels remotely, all while collecting real-time traffic data for critical decision making. This road tunnel application represents a vital part of Intelligent Transportation Systems, which depend on reliable communication and automation to enhance traffic. The Industrial Gigabit L2+ Managed PoE++ DIN-Rail Switches both power and network the ventilation system and the tunnel lighting system. PoE++ technology provides ample power to both systems. The Industrial Gigabit PoE+ Layer 2 Managed DIN-Rail Switches power and network TRENDnet’s Indoor/Outdoor PoE IR Bullet Network Cameras, which are strategically spaced out at multiple points throughout the traffic tunnel to ensure optimal coverage and reliable connectivity.
Entrance signs, gas sensors, and alarms installed in road tunnels commonly rely on serial connections for device management. These roadside traffic devices are connected to Industrial Modbus Gateways, which allow serial devices to be easily networked.
All of the mentioned TRENDnet industrial switches and Modbus gateways in this application, along with their connected devices, are then networked back to a command center up to 40km away via the Industrial Gigabit L2+ Managed PoE+ DIN-Rail Switch and Industrial SFP Single-Mode Module. At the command center, data is received over the fiber backhaul via the SFP Single Mode Module, and traffic is processed through the Gigabit Web Smart PoE+ Switch where connected cameras are managed with the 4K PoE NVR.
All of TRENDnet’s managed switches featured in this ITS road traffic tunnel application are compatible with TRENDnet Hive, enabling remote access to and management of those network devices at any time and from anywhere in the world with an internet connection. This approach saves time and costs, especially in the event of unexpected network issues, by eliminating travel time through remote management of multiple networked sites via the internet. Tollbooth Plaza

Self-service tolls require dependable networking infrastructure that keeps traffic flowing with little to no interruptions. The automated tollbooth utilizes a wide variety of networking products, including PoE cameras, industrial managed switches, and Modbus gateways. The Indoor/Outdoor PoE IR Bullet Network Cameras are used for both surveillance and analytic purposes. The Industrial Modbus Gateways are connected to the automated tollbooths. The Industrial Gigabit L2 Managed PoE+ DIN-Rail Switch networks the devices to the Local Control Center. These cameras, network switches, and Modbus gateways play a vital role in both V2X and V2I (Vehicle-to-Infrastructure) systems, helping to capture and relay vehicle data to roadside infrastructure for improved traffic flow and toll processing.
The Indoor/Outdoor PoE IR Bullet Network Cameras are also used with signage ahead of the tollbooth plaza for both surveillance and analytics. The Industrial Modbus Gateways connect both the Inductive-Loop Traffic Detectors and the Variable Message Signs (VMS) to the local network. Similar to the tollbooths, the Industrial Gigabit L2 Managed PoE+ DIN-Rail Switch networks devices located near the VMS to the Local Control Center via the Industrial SFP Multi-Mode Module.
Since this Local Command Center and this tollbooth are located in a rural area, they don’t have convenient access to the power grid and require solar power. The Industrial Gigabit PoE+ DIN-Rail Switch support variable voltage boosting and is connected to solar power. It is also connected to the Industrial SFP Multi-Mode Module which connects the devices at the VMS to the Local Control Center.
All PoE cameras are connected to and managed by the PoE NVR. The PoE NVR along with the other networked devices at the toll plaza are networked back to the Main Command Center up to 40km away. Rugged Industrial Gigabit L2 Managed PoE+ Rackmount Switches with the Industrial SFP Single-Mode Modules easily provide long-distance connectivity. TRENDnet Hive helps to manage network devices remotely, reducing wasted time and cost on sending a technician out on location. Port Terminal Facility

Networked port terminal equipment, such as sensor devices, automated mechanisms, and remote-operated terminal tractors, provide crucial, instantaneous data, which help to reduce unnecessary time spent on loading and unloading cargo, managing customs requirements, as well as lowering emissions from engines due to prolonged idling while waiting.
There are office buildings at ports that house a variety of resources, including warehousing, admin staff, as well as networking equipment that provide the backbone to communicate with networking devices throughout the port terminal. TRENDnet’s Gigabit Web Smart PoE+ Switch supports all other devices in this application. Connected to the switch are a Gigabit Multi-Wan VPN Business Router for internet access and a H.265 4K PoE NVR to manage the PoE surveillance cameras throughout the terminal. The web smart switch can be conveniently managed remotely with the TRENDnet Hive cloud network management service.
TRENDnet’s Industrial Gigabit L2 Managed PoE+ DIN-Rail Switches deliver both power and data over a single Ethernet cable to devices throughout the port terminal, including IP cameras and the crane optical character recognition system. This industrial PoE+ switch also features a built-in voltage booster to support 24V power sources that are outside of the typical 48V used with standard PoE, and is also remotely manageable with the TRENDnet Hive cloud service.
For areas outside the reach of standard PoE of more than 100m (328 ft.), such as near the networked ship-to-shore cranes and networked conveyor system, the Industrial SFP to Gigabit PoE++ Media Converters are used in conjunction with the Industrial SFP Single Mode Modules (a hardened version of the one that it is connected to in the office building) to provide long-distance surveillance solutions.

Railways & Trains

Easily network public transportation services even when they are on the move, all while linking back to a centralized control center for seamless data connectivity. Specifically designed and tested for transportation and telco applications, the Industrial EN 50155 M12 Gigabit PoE+ Railway Switch networks devices onboard the train, such as wireless access points, IP cameras, the intercom system, passenger information display system, lighting, HVAC, and more.
Throughout the public train station, there are several networked devices with varying purposes. PoE cameras are strategically placed throughout to provide general surveillance. Wireless APs serve a dual purpose; one for wireless devices installed throughout the station, such as public address systems (loud speakers), body-worn cameras by law enforcement officers and security staff, environmental sensors, and electronic devices used by staff; and the other is to provide public wireless hotspots for commuters and patrons.
TRENDnet’s Industrial Gigabit L2+ Managed PoE++ DIN-Rail Switches are installed throughout the station to network all types of equipment, such as a digital signage system with live schedule maps and self-service electronic ticket machines. These industrial switches, along with all the other networking and networked devices, are connected back to a utility closet located at the train station.
There are two main switches inside the utility closet. The Gigabit Web Smart PoE+ Switch with 10G SFP+ Slots is used to network all the gigabit-speed devices. The Multi-Gig Web Smart PoE+ Switch is utilized for multi-gigabit, 2.5GBASE-T devices, such as the wireless access points. Also connected to the multi-gigabit switch is a Dual Band WiFi 6 Gigabit Dual-WAN VPN SMB Router for high-speed access to the internet.
All cameras are managed by an H.265 4K PoE NVR. The 10G SFP+ Multi-Mode Modules, spanning distances up to 300m (984 ft.), connect the two switches together at ultra-fast 10G speeds. Using the 10G SFP+ Single-Mode Module, all networked equipment and data are connected back to the main hub about 10km away from the station.
