A Switch is, in principle, a multiport bridge. It concerns itself with the OSI layer two media access control (MAC) information in the frames it processes. It learns the MAC source addresses associated with each port as traffic appears, so little or no manual administration is required.

When a frame arrives at a port, the Switch examines its MAC destination address. If the destination is local to the segment the frame is on, the Switch filters the frame; that is, ignores the frame and does not retransmit it. If the Switch\'s address database associates the destination with another port, the frame is forwarded (or transmitted) on that port.
