Before looking at specific camera models, users need to determine if they would like to plan for a wireless, Power over Ethernet, or hybrid camera installation.

Wireless: Wireless is recommended for homes, apartments, or businesses in which users want to avoid running cables throughout the home to network cameras.

  • Tip: Even though wireless IP cameras connect to a wireless network, they still need to be plugged into a power source. When planning a wireless network, make sure there is a power source near each camera installation point.

Power over Ethernet (PoE): PoE combines power and data over a single Ethernet cable, providing a more stable alternative to wireless connections. However, one needs to network an Ethernet cable from Power Source Equipment (PSE) such as a PoE switch or PoE injector, to the camera’s location. PoE is recommended for installations that are far from a power source such as outdoor locations, warehouse installations, and certain areas of the home.

  • Tip: PoE installations are popular with small and medium size businesses. When installing these in a home, one needs to consider how to run the Ethernet cable from the PoE Switch or Injector (near a router) to the PoE IP Camera.

Hybrid: Savvy end users are now combining Powerline and Power over Ethernet (PoE) technologies to network IP cameras. Powerline uses existing electrical lines in the house to network devices. One Powerline module is installed at the home’s router and the other module is installed at the electrical outlet closest to the PoE IP Camera. A PoE injector is installed at the second Poweline module to send Power and data over a single Ethernet cable to the PoE IP Camera.

  • Tip: The extra hardware required in this installation type, makes it the most expensive option. However, this installation eliminates the cable clutter of a PoE installation while offering a more stable wired connection.
