Special Applications
Special
Applications
  • Special Applications are any Internet applications which cannot work through the built-in firewall.
  • If an Internet application does not work correctly, you can define it as a "Special Application". Click the "Configure Special Applications" button to open the "Special Applications" screen.
  • Only one (1) user can use a Special Application at any time.
  • If the application still does not work, try using the "DMZ" feature.

DMZ
Overview
  • The "DMZ" PC will receive all "Unknown" connections and data. This feature is normally used with applications which do not usually work when behind a Firewall.
  • The DMZ PC is effectively outside the Firewall, making it more vunerable to attacks. For this reason, you should only enable the DMZ feature when required.
  • If Enabled, you must select the PC to be used as the "DMZ" PC.
  • The "Super DMZ" feature will assign the WAN port (Internet) IP address to the selected PC. This provides support for programs which normally will not work behind a NAT Router like this device. However, this also exposes the PC to greater risk, and may hamper communication with other devices on the local LAN.
DMZ Type Select the desired option
  • Disabled - DMZ is disabled.
  • DMZ - Standard DMZ. The selected PC is a standard PC on your LAN, but it will receive any "unknown" connections and data, as descibed above.
  • Super DMZ - The WAN port IP address is assigned to the selected PC. This provides greater compatibility, but also exposes the PC to greater risk.

Warning!
File sharing should NOT be enabled on the PC used for "Super DMZ". Enabling this feature makes the PC vunerable to attacks.

PC

Select the PC to be used as the DMZ PC. If the PC uses a fixed IP address and is not in the list, you can add it by clicking the "Advanced Administration" button in the "PC Database" page.

Multi-DMZ
Enable Use this to enable each DMZ entry as required.
  • The DMZ PC is effectively outside the Firewall, making it more vunerable to attacks. For this reason, you should only enable the DMZ feature when required.
  • If Enabled, you must specify the WAN IP address, and select the PC to be used as the "DMZ" PC
WAN IP Address The multi-DMZ feature can only be used if your ISP has allocated additional (fixed) IP addresses to you. For each DMZ you have enabled, enter one of the IP addresses allocated by your ISP.
PC For each DMZ which is enabled, you must select a PC in the list. If the PC uses a fixed IP address, and is not in the list, you can add it using the "PC Database" option on the Advanced Menu.
