Powerline is a networking technology that was first introduced over 10 years ago and has been gaining popularity.  Powerline adapters allow users to create a high speed building-wide network from an electrical outlet in the home or office and eliminates the need to run additional Ethernet cords. Simply take the first adapter, plug it in near your existing router and connect it to the router and then connect up to 16 additional adapters. The two most popular Powerline technologies on the market today are 200 and 500Mbps. Here is a bit more information about each technology:

200Mbps

Theoretical Speed: 200Mbps

Actual Speed: 65Mbps

Why the Difference: Users are rightfully confused at times when they realize that a 200Mbps product does not achieve 200Mbps speeds. Industry Standards is to refer to the theoretical maximum speed of Powerline products. Many factors effect interference such as walls, distance, and other wireless devices.

Range: 984 Feet, which is more than enough to cover a large home. (Please note this is the linear distance over electrical wiring)

Why Should I Choose 200Mbps? 200Mbps is a slightly older technology, but still serves as a solid networking solution for moderate networks. An ideal user would be someone that reads e-mail, checks Facebook, and does light internet surfing.

500Mbps

Theoretical Speed: 500Mbps

Actual Speed: 150Mbps

Why the Difference:  As stated before, the industry standards refer to theoretical maximum speed. Theoretical speeds would be achieved in 'perfect' conditions which do not exist due to 'real world' interference.

Range: 984 Feet, which is more than enough to cover a large home. (Please note this is the linear distance over electrical wiring)

Why Should I Choose 500Mbps? 500Mbps is fastest Powerline technology on the market and serves as a solid solution for users with moderate to heavy networks. It is ideal for networks with multiple devices such as Internet TVs, computers, IP cameras, and gaming consoles.

Backward Compatible? Yes, with 200Mbps adapters; however, the addition of 200Mbps adapters will bottle neck speeds to 200Mbps.
