What is KVM?
KVM stands for keyboard, video(or visual display unit), and mouse. KVM products are hardware switches that enable users to easily control multiple computers with one set of one keyboard, monitor, and mouse console devices.The average home KVM switch is best designed to control tower computers. You can easily switch between computers by either pressing a button on the KVM switch or using a keyboard command.

Who uses it?
KVM switches are used by both home users and enterprise professionals. The average home user typically uses smaller KVM switches to control between two and four computers. Businesses use KVM switches to manage a large number of servers in data centers or networking rooms.

Do gamers use them?
Extreme gamers tend to setup standalone gaming consoles with the least number of additional peripherals which my effect their gaming experience. Moderate gamers, may choose to link their game console to another computer with a KVM switch—thereby reducing home office clutter.

How do you pick the right one?
Here are four simple steps to make choosing the right KVM switch painless. First, decide how many computers you would like to control. The most popular consumer models control two or up to four computers; Second, verify if your monitor has a VGA or newer DVI port; Third, verify your keyboard and mouse connections—most will have USB connections, while older models may have PS/2 connections; Lastly decide if you would like to hear audio from each computer. Once you've distinguished these four options, you can easily select the KVM switch that is right for you!
